The Ministry of Health has issued a notice to strengthen monitoring and prevention measures against the potential outbreak of Monkeypox (Mpox) in Lao PDR.

There has been recent confirmation of the first case of monkeypox infection in Lao PDR. This individual had a history of infection from a neighboring country. Given the ongoing entry and exit of Lao citizens and tourists to and from neighboring countries that have reported monkeypox cases, Lao PDR faces the risk of potential additional imported cases and local transmission within its borders.

The Ministry of Health has informed the Deputy Heads of Provincial and Vientiane Health Departments to increase their attention to surveillance and implementation of measures to prevent and control the potential outbreak of Monkeypox, especially among passengers traveling into Lao PDR from neighboring countries where monkeypox cases have been reported:

  1. Assign each province and the capital city to conduct initial risk assessments of monkeypox outbreaks within their jurisdictions and determine preparedness plans for prevention and response measures in case of new infections.
  2. Instruct all provincial, district, and public health facilities, including private clinics at all levels, to increase vigilance for patients presenting with fever and rash. If any suspicious cases are found, immediately report them and collect samples to send to the National Epidemiological Analysis Center for testing.
  3. Ensure that provincial laboratory analysis capabilities and collection equipment are fully prepared and equipped to facilitate swift and accurate testing and timely notification of results for potential moneypox infections.
  4. Prepare and provide treatment equipment, personal protective equipment, and sample collection kits, especially in provinces with international checkpoints and those deemed high-risk.
  5. Prioritize public health education campaigns aimed at informing both the general public about how to recognize moneypox symptoms and understand preventive measures for protection.

Therefore, this notification has been provided to circulate this notice and enforce adherence to its guidelines with utmost stringency.
